Brother John R. Kaighin, O.S.B. 57, monk ATCHISON, Kan. --
Brother John R. Kaighin, O.S.B., 57, a monk of St. Benedict's Abbey in Atchison,
Kan., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2001, due to a heart attack. Services will be
at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the abbey church. Burial will follow in the abbey
cemetery. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the abbey church.
Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home in Atchison is in charge of arrangements.
Brother John was born Jan. 24, 1944, at Lexington. He graduated in 1962 and
earned his bachelor's degree in music education in 1966 from St. Benedict's
College in Atchison. He then studied in summer sessions at Kearney State
College. He became a monk of St. Benedict's Abbey on Sept. 2, 1973, after
completing the year of training as a novice monk. He taught music in the
Atchison Catholic Elementary School and taught the English as a foreign
language program at Maur Hill Prep School in Atchison. In 1985 and 1986,
after studies at the University of Kansas, he obtained high school
accreditation for teaching English as a second language. He taught in the
English language support program at Benedictine College in 1990 and 1993. He
served his abbey community in a wide variety of ways. He was the abbey
librarian for several years and edited the in-house newsletter, News and
Views (renamed Home Pages). He had prepared the liturgical readings in the
daily worship service since 1993. He became assistant vocations director in
1997. He sang in the abbey schola from 1973 to 1992. He also served many
years on the abbey garden and grounds crew. Survivors include his sister,
Janet Wallace of Grand Island; and his fellow monks. |
