ATCHISON, Kan. -- Brother John R. Kaighin, O.S.B., 57, a monk of St. Benedict's Abbey in Atchison, Kan., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2001, due to a heart attack. He graduated in 1962 and earned his bachelor's degree in music education in 1966 from St. Benedict's College in Atchison. He then studied in summer sessions at Kearney State College. He became a monk of St. Benedict's Abbey on Sept. 2, 1973, after completing the year of training as a novice monk. He taught music in the Atchison Catholic Elementary School and taught the English as a foreign language program at Maur Hill Prep School in Atchison. In 1985 and 1986, after studies at the University of Kansas, he obtained high school accreditation for teaching English as a second language. He taught in the English language support program at Benedictine College in 1990 and 1993. He served his abbey community in a wide variety of ways. He was the abbey librarian for several years and edited the in-house newsletter, News and Views (renamed Home Pages). He had prepared the liturgical readings in the daily worship service since 1993. He became assistant vocations director in 1997. He sang in the abbey schola from 1973 to 1992. He also served many years on the abbey garden and grounds crew. Survivors include his sister, Janet Wallace of Grand Island; and his fellow monks.
