Manorial Roll 1663 – German Quarterlands

Note the 1702 Act of Settlement doubled quarterland rents. See elsewhere for Intacks and Cottages.

Note that the ordering of the Quarterlands differed from one Roll to the next though Ballakebag and Ballatersin always headed the list. The transcription has translated the odd bit of latin - all rents were in Roman numerals and are here placed in Arabic. The sub-amounts for different tenants are written above their name and are not always easily readable on the photocopy, my misreading may explain the occasional poor arithmetic.

Some names are underlined and followed by †- these I presume are deaths of tenants after the roll was produced.

1691 Composition Book: Kirk German

Introduction

See elsewhere for reasons and structure of this manorial record - the numbers and the Ref to 1703 composition book were not in the original but included here for ease of cross referencing - note some references are conjectural.

The following is a slightly modernised transcription - names are as in original though a few other abreviations expanded - the stereotyped format was arranged in two columns the first 'x formerly zz' and the second the lives in being. The entry is here split into its two components. The name under formerly generally refers to 1643 unless a later renewal is noted, the tenant is that of 1691 - note any lives in being must (except for later renewals) have been born by 1643 and thus be older than 48 years old. The given ages would however appear to have been rounded.

Note this is the last Manorial Roll before the 1702 Act of Settlement came into force which doubled some rents - the roll also contains fines for the years 1702 and 1703. See elsewhere for Quarterlands and Cottages.

As for other rolls the rentals were expressed in Roman numerals - here transcribed as arabic

Manorial Roll 1702 – German Cottages (Peel)

Note this was the last roll using the old numbering scheme before the 1702 Act of Settlement, after which a new numbering was adopted - this later numbering was based on grouping properties under the tenant's name, see elsewhere for the mapping between sequence numbers.

The original appears to have been amended as changes are noted in a different? hand - these are indicated (..); some licence has been taken with the odd bits of latin (eg 'et' usually given as &). Several names are very difficult to read.

See elsewhere for Intacks and Quarterlands

Abbeylands' Rents - German 1703

Note the rental book had two columns - one for Rent (in pence) and the other for Hens (presumeably a hangover from the days when tenants paid in kind).

(note entries are not numbered however sequence is as in subsequent years and the numbering from these is added for convenience).

Entries have form xxx formerly yyy - here for convenience the former names are placed in their own column - These former tenants would appear to reflect those of 1607 rather than 1611 - there would appear to be no later lists in Lib Mon though changes are noted (research to be done) as books dating up to 1653 exist.

[The microfilm is not clear in some places, especially page with entries 33-39, hence ~~~ and ? for questionable or indistinct entries]

Cottages - Kirk German 1703 Composition Book

This is transcribed from the 1760 copy of the 1704 document (MM microfilm RC2) - earlier folios 1-6 cover Quarterlands (later folios include Intacks); only those marked Cottages are transcribed. The copy is on successive pages of a bound book - the folio numbers presumably correspond to the pages of the original from which this 1760 copy was made. The 1691 composition book giving details of lives remaining is also available.

Values of rent are given in Roman numerals (transcribed as Arabic) but the column values (indicated = ...) are in Arabic numerals.

The entry numbers (n) are my own for ease of reference and do not appear on the original

Manorial Roll 1706 – German Cottages (Peel)

NB #17 of later rolls was missing also the court house was numbered 23 in this book; also numbered was the house near the cross (#43 in this roll) - thus putting all subsequent numbers out, #66 of later rolls is also missing (thus all subsequent #'s are out by 1) - this transcription however keeps to the subsequent numbering for ease of comparison.

Mace (or Maec) Moar is indicated as north of Tynwald Mills - some 3 miles from Peel, however they have headed the list since the list was re-organised c.1575.

Note some of these refer to land within Peel - see Cottages

Note also that no 46 in this sequence is left blank and does not appear on previous roll nor on subsequent rolls (it would appear to be a clerical error being a repeat of #33) - thus to keep compatibility with other rolls the numbers after 46 have been decreased by 1.

Abbey Land's Rents - German 1796

Note the rental book had two columns - one for Rent (in pence) and the other for Hens (presumeably a hangover from the days when tenants paid in kind).

This book appears to have been in use until 1858 - some entries are extrememely confusing with many entries of form m1813 or o1813 etc - which as for Lord's rent presumeably mean that some deed passed through the court in May(or Oct) 1813. Not all such have been included here - #26 (Michael Street Properties) was 'littered' with such notes.

The Abbeyland properties in Peel comprise the area approximately bounded by Market Street, the Shore, Bridge Street and Michael Street.

Census of Peel-Town, 9 May 1814

Introduction

It is not known why this census was taken - there is a corresponding one of the Parish of German (still to be transcribed) - it was possibly for church cess purposes though why then was Hugh Clucas (high Bailiff) involved?

The order of houses is almost certainly topographic

Manorial Roll 1816 – German Cottages (Peel)

This book was started in 1816 and remained in use until 1854 - there are many cryptic lines with dates under many of the names (shown as (1824) which probably indicate dates at which tenants changed and the deeds passed through the court.

The numbering of the entries was taken over from the 1794 and 1764 books, which in turn seem to take over that of earlier books (certainly to 1728 and probably still earlier - they are not in topographic order. Note that comments such as "formerly Jno Keruish's" etc are in many cases merely identifying tags copied over from book to book - several of those in this 1816 list are identical to those of the 1728 book and might well refer to owners pre 1643!.

Abbey Land's Rents - German 1858

Note the rental book had two columns - one for Rent (in pence) and the other for Hens ( a hangover from the days when tenants paid in kind , the book has a price equivalent for the various rents paid in kind).

This book appears to have been in use until 1866 - #26 (Michael Street) shows the major development of this plot.

The Abbeyland properties in Peel comprise the area approximately bounded by Market Street, the Shore, Bridge Street and Michael Street.

Manorial Roll 1869 – German Cottages (Peel)

This book was started in 1869 and remained in use until c.1881 - the format differs from earlier books with few details of each property but with two additional columns marked entry and fine.

The numbering of the entries was taken over from earlier books,- they are not in topographic order.

Peel Lord’s Rent, 1871 ?

This little book is in possession of the Leece Museum, East Quay, Peel, the transcription was given me by Mrs Young.

The date on the Notebook, which appears to be an aide-memoir for the collector is 1871 - however the two years 1856 and 1858 are noted as being paid and some entries in the notebook might well apply to an earlier year (? c.1854) - eg mention made of Thomas Quine who was schoolmaster of Clothworkers School from 1830-c.1843. Nathaniel Pickels died in 1849 (and is buried in small plot at Atholl Street Methodist Church). F. C. Skrimshire was Agent for Woods and Forests from c.1848-1884. However assuming the format new(old) for some entries then John Quayle(Basil Mylrea) corresponds to a date after 1864 for the White Lion Inn in Bridge Street.
