It also helps when sorting the data if all like names are spelled the
same. Example, Elizabeth, Beth, Liz,
Lizzie, etc., are all spelled - A side
note about the surnames John and Joseph.
Prior to about the middle of the 19th century, I could find

Apprentice Coopering (1871); Master Cooper (1881); Cooper (1891); Wesleyan Preacher; Author (1918, 1925) |
From Alisoun MacDermid (alisoun#fastmail.fm): Do
you know about the author John Richard Kaighin who wrote pieces for the
Birkenhead newspaper and published two books? One must have been racist or
anti-semetic and had disappeared. The other of which people were more proud
appears on his tombstone. In the book he talks of Mr. Philip Kaighin who had
2 unmarried children who ran a hardware and toy shop. He was a cooper by
trade but believed in temperance and was also a Wesleyan preacher. Do you
know anything about this side of the Kaighin Family? Also: "I have a photo of JR Kaighin with
Emily Margaret and a photo of the first three of their daughters. Little
Ethel is not on the gravestone." Also: "I have held a copy of Bygone
Birkenhead while I was visiting Flaybrick cemetery to see Emily Margaret’s
grave and her husband JR Kaighin." Also: "Emily Margaret born 1863 was my great
grandma Maria's sister. Actually she
had 8 sisters and I am interested in all of them and the brother too! The
father George Smith (market constable and gas lamplighter) was also mentioned
in JR Kaighins Bygone Birkenhead book. George Smith was likened to the
Salvation Army’s William Booth. Another Methodist!" Also: "Another one of Emily Margaret’s
sisters called Annie married Mr. Howell. Mr. Howell was also mentioned in
Bygone Birkenhead and described as a market trader His granddaughter says she
remembers the smells and the noises of the market. She also says that she had
been told as a child she had a famous author in the family but when she went
to the library the book was never there. She thought she was being teased but
in fact the book was so popular it was always out on loan! It was a set text
book when she was at school but she didn't know (as she had a different
surname!). She told me the other book was called "Bells, candles and
Jews" (that could be the one you found.) I'm going to see her next week
so I'll check." |
