Legend

Parent Family

Follow this number up one generation to the parent family.  The first entry in each family grouping is the marriage record.  So the Corresponding Family number will be the family that the father of that family came from.

-         “UNKNOWN” means no link to the previous generation found.

Child Family

Follow this number down one generation to the child family.

Family Date

The date of marriage if available.  If not, then an approximate date prior to the birth of the known first born.

First Name

Self explanatory.  I’ve conventionalized all names to avoid duplicity and ambiguity.  It also helps when sorting the data if all like names are spelled the same.  Example, Elizabeth, Beth, Liz, Lizzie, etc., are all spelled Elizabeth.  Many times, the same person will have their name spelled multiple ways on different records or events.

- A side note about the surnames John and Joseph.  Prior to about the middle of the 19th century, I could find no Kaighins in the Isle of Man with the surname Joseph.  However there are many entries in the IGI with that name.  Without exception, all Josephs prior to 1850 or thereabouts turned out to be Johns.  Every one of them had a corresponding entry of “John” in the IGI.   This is due to a transcription misinterpretation probably by the IGI transcriber.  In early records, John was very often written as “Jo”.

M/F

Male, Female, Husband, Wife or Unmarried

Event

Birth, Christening, Marriage or Unmarried

Date

Date of event

Death / Burial

If I found the date of both events, I always listed the date of death.

Father First

Self explanatory (Surname of father is assumed to be Kaighin.  Any variations in surname spelling will eventually be added in either the “notes” column or the “IGI surname spelling” column.)

Mother Last

Self explanatory.  There were often multiple spellings of the same surname, so I always used the spelling that was used in the majority for that individual.

Mother First

Self explanatory.  Spelling is also conventionalized in this column for sorting purposes.

Spouse

Self explanatory.  There were often multiple spellings of the same surname, so I always used the spelling that was used in the majority for that individual.  Multiple spouses are listed in additional spouse column(s).

Location

Location of the event.

Resided at

Place or Places individual was known to have lived

Emigration

If emigrated, lists sequence of stops if known.

Occupation

Date will follow occupation if that occupation is listed in a record.

Memo, Notes and Sources

Sources listed here as well as anything else I found pertinent or interesting.  As of January 27th 2006 I am still annotating my sources in the databases, so all sources are not yet listed.  In any web pages I create using the database, all email address have had the “@” removed and replaced with “#”.  This hides email address from spam “spiders” that search web pages for email addresses.

The first row of each family contains the parent’s marriage data if known.

Author (1918, 1925)

From Alisoun MacDermid (alisoun#fastmail.fm): Do you know about the author John Richard Kaighin who wrote pieces for the Birkenhead newspaper and published two books? One must have been racist or anti-semetic and had disappeared. The other of which people were more proud appears on his tombstone. In the book he talks of Mr. Philip Kaighin who had 2 unmarried children who ran a hardware and toy shop. He was a cooper by trade but believed in temperance and was also a Wesleyan preacher. Do you know anything about this side of the Kaighin Family?

Also: "I have a photo of JR Kaighin with Emily Margaret and a photo of the first three of their daughters. Little Ethel is not on the gravestone."

Also: "I have held a copy of Bygone Birkenhead while I was visiting Flaybrick cemetery to see Emily Margaret’s grave and her husband JR Kaighin."

Also: "Emily Margaret born 1863 was my great grandma Maria's sister.  Actually she had 8 sisters and I am interested in all of them and the brother too! The father George Smith (market constable and gas lamplighter) was also mentioned in JR Kaighins Bygone Birkenhead book. George Smith was likened to the Salvation Army’s William Booth. Another Methodist!"

Also: "Another one of Emily Margaret’s sisters called Annie married Mr. Howell. Mr. Howell was also mentioned in Bygone Birkenhead and described as a market trader His granddaughter says she remembers the smells and the noises of the market. She also says that she had been told as a child she had a famous author in the family but when she went to the library the book was never there. She thought she was being teased but in fact the book was so popular it was always out on loan! It was a set text book when she was at school but she didn't know (as she had a different surname!). She told me the other book was called "Bells, candles and Jews" (that could be the one you found.) I'm going to see her next week so I'll check."

Listed as "Joseph R. Kaighin" in 1861 census

Emily died December quarter 1898 in Birkenhead
