A
statistical analysis of the surname Kaighin as found in the
International
Genealogical Index (IGI) for the
1611-1883
The following statistics represent entries in the
International Genealogical Index (IGI) for all Kaighins and Kaighin variants
between the years of 1611 and 1883 in the Isle of Man. The data was extracted from the March 1992
IGI microfiche version so it does not include data from the online IGI version
found at www.familysearch.org. This is not a strict total of all Kaighin
individuals as many have up to six entries for the same event, and many do not
show up at all in the IGI. There are an
estimated 753 unique individuals represented in the 1127 entries. As of November 2004, I have found an
additional 119 unique individuals on the
This data is meant to be used as a means to gauge
demographics and trending. Some
comparisons between the data found in the IGI and Kaighins now found in public
directories (2004) can be found at the bottom.

Family groupings (for the time period 1611-1883 on the Isle of Man. The criteria
for this statistic is one or
more individual(s) with parents
who were married with an identified marriage date, or two or more
individuals with the same
identified parents regardless if a marriage date is known. Six of these
families emigrated after either
the date of marriage or date of first born.)
3
Kaighin to Kaighin cousin marriages. (two
first cousin marriages, one third cousin marriage.)
Most

Ell, Elle, Ellen, Ellenor, Ellin,
Ellinor, Ellinr and
Eleanor.
78 Infant or child deaths
(Criteria is that they died before their 18th birthday. There are
probably many more
that I have yet to identify. This is a statistic that is very telling of
the hardship of the times. This equals
an
8.9% child mortality rate,
but this is actually probably much higher.
Compare this to today in the western
world which has a less than 1% child mortality.)
Most common names, John

Male to Female birth ratio
313/276, or a 53.14% male to 46.85% female ratio. I cannot account for this disparity.

Many of the above spelling variations are likely due to
clerical error. Errors seem
statistically more likely in parishes where the name wasn’t as common and the
parish clerk wasn’t familiar with the correct spelling. The reader must keep in mind that most
ordinary folk were illiterate and had to rely on the clerks for the spelling of
their name. The three most common forms,
Kaighin, Kaighen and Kaighan are the only three to survive to this day. There is one other variation, Kaighn, which
evolved independent of the
