The Descendants of John Kaighin and Catherine Callister

Legend

Family

A unique number I have assigned to each family in my database.  They are sequenced by date or approximate date of the first marriage.

Corr Family (Corresponding)

Follow this number to the corresponding family either up a generation or down a generation.  The first entry in each family grouping is the marriage record.  So the Corresponding Family number will be the family that the father of that family came from.  A number in the Corresponding Family column next to a child indicates the subsequent family he produced.   A secondary purpose of this column is to indicate a continuation or an end of the Kaighin line in that branch.

-         “UNKNOWN” means no link to the previous generation found.

-         “Name” means the female married a non-Kaighin male, see the “Spouse” column.   I.e., “Carran” means that female married into the Carran family.

-         infant”, “child”, “teenager” indicates early death.

-         “Illegitimate”.  If the father is known, his last name will be in the “notes” column if it is not Kaighin.

-         no issue”.  Indicates no children

-         unmarried” – Self Explanatory.

-         In the case of multiple marriages by a male, there will be multiple numbers like “1350 / 1380”

-         In the case of multiple marriages by a female, there will be multiple names

Fam Date

The date of marriage if available.  If not, then an approximate date prior to the birth of the known first born.  If the letter “p” follows the date, this means “prior to”.

First Name

Self explanatory.  I’ve conventionalized all names to avoid duplicity and ambiguity.  It also helps when sorting the data if all like names are spelled the same.  Example, Elizabeth, Beth, Liz, Lizzie, etc., are all spelled Elizabeth.  Many times, the same person will have their name spelled multiple ways on different records or events.  All variations will eventually be added to either the “notes” column or the “IGI Christian Name Spelling” column.

- A side note about the surnames John and Joseph.  Prior to about the middle of the 19th century, I could find no Kaighins in the Isle of Man with the surname Joseph.  However there are many entries in the IGI with that name.  Without exception, all Josephs prior to 1850 or thereabouts turned out to be Johns.  Every one of them had a corresponding entry of “John” in the IGI.   This is due to a transcription misinterpretation probably by the IGI transcriber.  In early records, John was very often written as “Jo”.

Date of event

Death / Burial

If I found the date of both events, I always listed the date of death.

Father First

Self explanatory (Surname of father is assumed to be Kaighin.  Any variations in surname spelling will eventually be added in either the “notes” column or the “IGI surname spelling” column.)

Mother Last

Self explanatory.  There were often multiple spellings of the same surname, so I always used the spelling that was used in the majority for that individual.

Mother First

Self explanatory.  Spelling is also conventionalized in this column for sorting purposes.

Spouse

Self explanatory.  There were often multiple spellings of the same surname, so I always used the spelling that was used in the majority for that individual.

Emigration

If emigrated, lists sequence of stops if known.

Notes and Sources

Sources listed here as well as anything else I found pertinent or interesting.  As of July 28, 2005 I am still annotating my sources in the databases, so all sources are not yet listed.  In any web pages I create using the database, all email address have had the “@” removed and replaced with “#”.  This hides email address from spam “spiders” that search web pages for email addresses.

Email discussion:

Grandpa (George Henry Kaighin) married in 1929 in Birmingham, England might have been on there as would my dad (John William Fife Kaighin) born 1933 Birmingham, England.  So a quick history for you, could find out more from my dad if you want me to:

My great grandfather was William Kaighin from Peel, a guard on the IoM railway.  Apparently died after falling off the train drunk.  we have a photo of him in IoM railway uniform.

George Henry Kaighin, born Peel (I think 1892) moved to Birmingham, England in early 1900's and become a teacher.  We have his IoM football team cap, dated 1909-10.  George married Mary Barclay PRIVATE, of Ayrshire, in Birmingham in 1929.

John Kaighin was their only son, born PRIVATE, married Meg (Margaret) PRIVATE in 1960.  Three children:

Nicholas Robert Fife Kaighin (PRIVATE)

Christopher john Fife Kaighin (PRIVATE)

Sally Elizabeth Kaighin  (PRIVATE)

From this generation one child carries the Kaighin surname:

Ronan Adams Kaighin (PRIVATE)

But we also have Ciara Kaighin Adams (PRIVATE)

Would be interesting to hear if you have us in your scheme already.

Best wishes

Chris Kaighin

Hi Chris,

After poking around a bit in my records, I was able to come up with your Grandfather and Great Grandfather, but I believe you're mistaken on his name.  If I'm correct, your great grandfather was named John Kaighin.  See this 1901 census record.  The family lived at 3 Station Road, Peel and the father, John was listed as a Railroad Guard, married to Christian with daughter Catherine J., and son George H., age 9 (born about 1892 in Peel).  Checking the IOM Civil Marriage Index 1849-1923, I found a record for a John Kaighin and Christian Watterson, 26 May 1889, K. German (the only spouse of a Kaighin with the forename of Christian in my entire database.)

Following the census records, I found the same family in the 1891 Census. Two things immediately strike me.  They are residing at 44 Glenfaba Rd next door to the family of Eleanor Watterson, age 35.  Maybe the sister of our Christian?  Also, Christian was annotated as Catherine.  Likely a typo.  John in that record was listed as "Brakeman, R Road."

In the Brown's Directory of 1894, John is listed at 58 Glenfaba Rd, Peel, again a Brakesman.

Going further back, I've linked John into a family in Ramsey.  I have him as the son of John Kaighin (parents unknown) and Catherine Callister.  This link is tenuous however.  It is an assumption based primarily on his date and location of birth and first name, (John Kaighin, abt 1862, Ramsey) and the proximity of the match from the above census records.  If I'm correct, then he was one of three siblings of John and Catherine and resided on Church Street, Ramsey.

John Kaighin married Catherine Callister 24 May 1859, Kirk Braddan. (From IGI and Philip Allen's Notes -- Look for family 16500, also see here) Film # M038021, sheet 8217

Henry Kaighin born (presumably illegitimately) to John Kaighin and Catherine Callister four years earlier 18 March 1855
Later christened with brother John on 5 Jan 1862.

John Thomas Kaighin christened 15 March 1860, St. Barnabas,
Douglas (likely died as a child, although I can find no record of his death or burial)

John Kaighin (your great grandfather) christened 5 Jan 1862,
St. Paul's Church, Ramsey (record lists father as mariner, residing at Church St., Ramsey).

Kindest Regards,

Greg Kaighin

Further to this discussion, I believe I've found Christian Watterson's family in the 1881 Census residing at No. 2 Quay, Peel.  Click here.

The IGI, then lists a Christian Watterson as being christened 26 Nov 1869 in K. German, daughter of James Watterson and Elizabeth Cubbon.

The Eleanor Watterson mentioned below then was more likely Christian's Sister-in-Law.  Following that line of reasoning, I looked up the marriage of James Watterson, Christian's older brother, and the only brother within a reasonable age of the Eleanor shown in the 1891 Census at
44 Glenfaba Rd.  He appears to have married on 22 Aug 1880 in Kirk Rushen to Eleanor Margaret Harrison.
