Jane,

All the information below is copied from my database which you may download from www.kaighin.com/familyhistory/kaighin.htm.  I don’t know how much detail you wanted, so I only went back 4 generations from Addie.  Prior to the earliest generation I have listed (family 380) here it gets complicated as there was a third cousin marriage.  And I didn’t include branches of the family started from siblings.  If you want all this, let me know and I will update this page for you with that information.  I hope this helps.

  • KAIGHIN, GILMORE
    11 November 1998

I'm looking for information on Addie KAIGHIN GILMORE. She was born in Blue Hill, NE and died there in 1939. She was married to Andrew Gilmore.  Her mother was Sophia McCLURE Kaighin (born in Illinois) and her father was John Kaighin.  If you have information on any of these people, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Some notes on Sources:

-         IGI.  International Genealogical Index.  This is a primary source for any genealogist.  It is a collection of individual records from all over the world collected by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  The website to search the IGI is www.familysearch.org.  IGI records for Kaighins in the Isle of Man are from between 1580 and about 1876.  I am currently in the middle of annotating all IGI entries for Kaighins

-         Headstones.  The headstones linked in family 1190 are from Kirk Michael Parish Cemetery.  I took them when I visited there in 1999.  A full transcription of monumental inscriptions at all known grave sites on the Isle of Man is either completed or nearing completion and is available for purchase through the Isle of Man Family History Society

-         AFN = Ancestral File Number.  These can be found on www.familysearch.org, run by the LDS church.  There are often multiple AFNs for an individual.  This is due to multiple submitters inputting the same individual.

Legend:

Family

A unique number I have assigned to each family in my database.  They are sequenced by date or approximate date of marriage.

Corr Family (Corresponding)

Follow this number to the corresponding family either up a generation or down a generation.  The first entry in each family grouping is the marriage record.  So the Corresponding Family number will be the family that the father of that family came from.  A number in the Corresponding Family column next to a child indicates the subsequent family he produced.   A secondary purpose of this column is to indicate a continuation or an end of the Kaighin line in that branch.

-         “x” means no link to the previous generation found.

-         “male” means the female married a non-Kaighin male, see the “Spouse” column.

-         “infant”, “child”, “teenager” indicates early death.

-         “Illegitimate”.  If the father is known, his last name will be in the “notes” column if it is not Kaighin.

-         “no issue”.  Indicates no offspring

Fam Date

The date of marriage if available.  If not, then an approximate date prior to the birth of the known first born.  If the letter “p” follows the date, this means “prior to”.

First Name

Self explanatory.  I’ve conventionalized all names to avoid duplicity and ambiguity.  It also helps when sorting the data if all like names are spelled the same.  Example, Elizabeth, Beth, Liz, Lizzie, etc., are all spelled Elizabeth.  Many times, the same person will have their name spelled multiple ways on different records or events.  All variations will eventually be added to either the “notes” column or the “IGI Christian Name Spelling” column.

A side note about the surnames John and Joseph.  Prior to about the middle of the 19th century, I could find no Kaighins in the Isle of Man with the surname Joseph.  However there are many entries in the IGI with that name.  Without exception, all Josephs prior to 1850 or thereabouts turned out to be Johns.  Every one of them had a corresponding entry of “John”.   This is due to a transcription misinterpretation probably by the IGI transcriber.  In early records, John was very often written as “Jo”.

Date of event

Death / Burial

If I found the date of both events, I always listed the date of death.

Father First

Self explanatory (Surname of father is assumed to be Kaighin.  Any variations in surname spelling will eventually be added in either the “notes” column or the “IGI surname spelling” column.)

Mother Last

Self explanatory.  There were often multiple spellings of the same surname, so I always used the spelling that was used in the majority for that individual.

Mother First

Self explanatory.  Spelling is also conventionalized in this column for sorting purposes.

Spouse

Self explanatory.  There were often multiple spellings of the same surname, so I always used the spelling that was used in the majority for that individual.

Emigration

If emigrated, lists sequence of stops if known.

Location

Location of the event.

Notes and Sources

Sources listed here as well as anything else I found pertinent or interesting.  As of 4 August 2004, I am still annotating my sources in the databases, so all sources are not yet listed.
