The Curragh Kaighin Branch

The Kaighin Descendants of Thomas Kaighin and Jane Killey

This page, and the discussion pages for the other branches on this website were created several years ago.

Due to the massive amount of effort involved, I no longer keep these discussion pages updated.

So the data you find here has become stale.  I do keep the Kaighin Genealogy Database updated.

You can find this on the index page.

Legend

Family

A unique number I have assigned to each family in my database.  They are sequenced by date or approximate date of the first marriage.

Corr Family (Corresponding)

Follow this number to the corresponding family either up a generation or down a generation.  The first entry in each family grouping is the marriage record.  So the Corresponding Family number will be the family that the father of that family came from.  A number in the Corresponding Family column next to a child indicates the subsequent family he produced.   A secondary purpose of this column is to indicate a continuation or an end of the Kaighin line in that branch.

-         “UNKNOWN” means no link to the previous generation found.

-         “Name” means the female married a non-Kaighin male, see the “Spouse” column.

i.e., “Carran” means that female married into the Carran family.

-         “infant”, “child”, “teenager” indicates early death.

-         “Illegitimate”.  If the father is known, his last name will be in the “notes” column if it is not Kaighin.

-         “no issue”.  Indicates no children

-         “unmarried” – Self Explanatory.

-         In the case of multiple marriages by a male, there will be multiple numbers like “1350 / 1380”

-         In the case of multiple marriages by a female, there will be multiple names

Fam Date

The date of marriage if available.  If not, then an approximate date prior to the birth of the known first born.  If the letter “p” follows the date, this means “prior to”.

First Name

Self explanatory.  I’ve conventionalized all names to avoid duplicity and ambiguity.  It also helps when sorting the data if all like names are spelled the same.  Example, Elizabeth, Beth, Liz, Lizzie, etc., are all spelled Elizabeth.  Many times, the same person will have their name spelled multiple ways on different records or events.  All variations will eventually be added to either the “notes” column or the “IGI Christian Name Spelling” column.

M/F

Male, Female, Husband, Wife or Unmarried

Event

B=Birth, C=Christening, M=Marriage, U=Unmarried

Date

Date of event

Death / Burial

If I found the date of both events, I always listed the date of death.

Father First

Self explanatory.

Mother Last

Self explanatory.  There were often multiple spellings of the same surname, so I always used the spelling that was used in the majority for that individual.

Mother First

Self explanatory.  Spelling is also conventionalized in this column for sorting purposes.

Spouse

Self explanatory.  There were often multiple spellings of the same surname, so I always used the spelling that was used in the majority for that individual.

Location

Location of the event.

Of

Place or Places individual was (or is) known to have lived

Emigration

If emigrated, lists sequence of stops if known.

Notes and Sources

Sources listed here as well as anything else I found pertinent or interesting.  As of May 12, 2005 I am still annotating my sources in the databases, so all sources are not yet listed.  In any web pages I create using the database, all email address have had the “@” removed and replaced with “#”.  This hides email address from spam “spiders” that search web pages for email addresses.

IGI

Yes/No. If there is a corresponding entry in the IGI (International Genealogical Index).  If there were multiple entries for an individual, they are listed in the “IGI Notes” column in sequence of how they show up in the IGI.  The following columns follow the same sequence.  Example, if the “IGI Notes” column contains “C, C, B”, then two christening entries and one birth entry were found for that individual, in that sequence.  The names in the next two columns and the data in the “IGI Source Batch / Film #” and the “IGI Source Serial / Sheet” columns then correspond sequentially with the C, C, and B entries in the “IGI Notes” column.

IGI Notes

See explanation for IGI.

IGI Christian Name spelling

See explanation for IGI.  The spelling is as found in the IGI.

IGI Surname Spelling

See explanation for IGI.  The spelling is as found in the IGI.

IGI Source Batch / Film #

See explanation for IGI.  These are film numbers that can be ordered at any Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) Family History Center.

IGI Source Serial / Sheet

See explanation for IGI.  Location this information can be found on the Film.

Under ' Fairy ' Control.—'About fifty years ago,' said Mr. T. Leece, the son, 'Paul Taggart, my wife’s uncle, a tailor by trade, had for an apprentice, Humphrey Keggan, a young man eighteen or nineteen years of age ; and it often happened that while the two of them would be returning home at nightfall, the apprentice would suddenly disappear from the side of the tailor, and even in the midst of a conversation, as soon as they had crossed the burn in the field down there (indicating an adjoining field). And Taggart could not see nor hear Humphrey go. The next morning Humphrey would come back, but so worn out that he could not work, and he always declared that little men had come to him in , crowds, and used him as a horse, and that with them he had travelled all night across fields and over hedges.’ The wife of the narrator substantiated this strange psychological story by adding :—' This is true, because I know my Uncle Paul too well to doubt what he says.’

Email to I wrote to Tom Wagner regarding the above and below families:

Tom,
As you read this, make sure you click on each of the links.  These prove my theories.
I've solved the mystery of the elder John Thomas Kaighin's parents.  I found a marriage entry in the IGI of a Thomas Kaighin, born "about 1808" in Jurby who married (according to the IGI) Ann Killip or Cowley on 3 Nov 1842. Ann was the daughter of William Cowley and Alice Kelly.  She had been previously married to William Killip on 8 Jan 1832 (or click here or here)
The children of Ann Cowley and William Killip appear to be the following
Ann, christened 31 Mar 1833, Lezayre
William, christened 5 Jun 1836, Lezayre
There is a William Killip buried in Ballaugh 22 Dec 1840, age 33 (born about 1807).  So it looks like poor Ann was a widow with two youngsters when she married Thomas two years later.  In my database I previously had two families that are now one:

1.  Thomas Kaighen married to an Ann Killip 3 Nov 1842, with two children, John Thomas, christened 22 Sep 1843, Lezayre and Edward, christened 17 Oct 1845, Sulby
2.  Thomas Kaighin married to Ann Cowley (date unknown) with two children, John Thomas christened 22 Sep 1843, Lezayre and Eliza Alice, christened 19 Dec 1847, Lezayre  (also here)

I just never noticed that the John Thomas in both families were born exactly the same day.  It's curious that in Thomas' will in 1882 son Edward is not mentioned, this also threw me off.  There are no Edwards in the burial index that fit his birth year or anything close for that matter, so I assumed he lived.  He does fit well for a marriage in 29 Aug 1874 in Braddan to Jane Cowin  but that's just speculation. There's also the possibility that he moved off island and disinherited his share prior to 1882.
Eliza Alice married Thomas Callister (or click here) in the September quarter of 1884 at St. John's Church in Wirral, Birkenhead, Cheshire, England.  They were back in the Isle of Man in 1892 to pick up their 5 pounds inheritance per father Thomas' will.
There is one anomoly worth mentioning.  The marriage entry mentions that Thomas was born about 1808.  However, his will mentions he died "on or about the 18th day of April 1882".  A check of  the burial index shows a Thomas Kaighin, buried in Bride 17 Apr 1882, age 85, putting his birth year about 1796/7 (11 years before the 1808 mentioned for his marriage record.)  Regardless, the Thomas who we know as John Thomas' father was married to Ann (Cowley) Killip and was the third son of John and Margaret Christian christened 28 July 1796 in Jurby.  He had four other siblings including one younger brother James, christened 24 January 1802. This was the James mentioned as a witness in 1870 to Thomas' will.  James died in 1876.
I did some further examining of the burial index and found that there is an Ann Kaighin (als Cowley) who died age 50 and was buried 9 Sep 1854, so her birth date would have been about 1804.  A check of the IGI finds an Ann Cowley christened 02 Apr 1804 in Kirk German (or Michael), the daughter of William Cowley and Alice Kelly.  Interestingly, whoever submitted those last two entries to the IGI also found her death date to be 9 Sep 1854.  So at her death, she left some children under age for 58 year old Thomas to take care of.  Her two Killip children were 21 and 18 (and likely on their own by this time.) and the Kaighin children were 11 (John Thomas), 9 (Edward, if he was still alive), and 7 (Eliza Alice).
